What nobody tells you about self-care when you have depression is that, showering is genuinely a daily struggle.

When I experience severe depressive episodes, I tend to shut myself off from the world and sometimes go weeks without a shower or a vegetable (gross, I know). During those times, my self care plan is to simply get out of bed and put on clean clothes.

For those with mental health issues (everything from stress and low mood, to disorders requiring medication); self-care is often the biggest part of the battle to remain semi-functional.

Self-care encompasses everything from relaxation, exercise, meditation, to the very basics of diet, nourishment and general hygiene.

Since starting my blog I’ve come across many studies suggesting that regular self-care can reduce the frequency and severity of mental illness relapses. I am not suggesting that regular self-care is the only thing that will reduce relapse, but it helps.

I’m slowly starting to create my own personal self-care plan, that I hope will reduce the likelihood of a relapse, starting with natural antidepressant supplements, creating a relaxation space at home, skin care and aromatherapy.
